The thought of surviving without the essential organs of the body is terrifying, isn’t it? Our human body is designed exceptionally and can work if any organ is removed partially or completely. Organs like the heart and brain are important and the human body cannot function without them. But what about kidneys? We have two of them.
Here we will discuss the functions of kidneys, the causes, treatment, and prevention of kidney failure, and the consequences of both kidneys failing.
Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located under the ribcage of the human body. These are responsible for filtering blood and eliminating toxins from the body. The toxins are removed in the form of urine. Other than filtering blood and removing waste, kidneys are also in charge of balancing the electrolytes in the body. Without kidneys, the body would not be able to function properly, resulting in waste products being collected in the body.
Complete kidney failure is called ESRD (end-stage renal disease). Kidney failure does not happen in a day or two. It is the outcome of gradual loss of kidney function. If kidneys fail and stop working, the body fills up with water and toxins. This condition is known as uremia. The hands and feet of an individual may swell up. The body needs to be cleansed before it can function properly, which is why a person might feel weak and tired. If uremia is not treated, then it can lead to seizures or coma.
Several causes can lead to kidney failure. High blood pressure and diabetes are the most common causes of kidney failure.
Other causes of kidney failure include -
If any individual suffers from kidney failure then he/she needs the right treatment to lead an active life. There are two main treatments to get over kidney failure, i.e., dialysis and kidney transplant.
Before choosing a treatment, there are many factors to consider including lifestyle, age, health problems, and others.
Dialysis- In kidney failure, kidneys do not filter the blood and as a result, toxins and waste build up in the body. Dialysis treatment does the work of kidneys by removing the toxins, waste, and fluid from the blood.
Here are some preventive tips to follow to reduce the chances of kidney failure-
Kidneys are vital organs of the human body and perform crucial work by eliminating waste and toxins from the body. Kidney failure is fatal if not treated properly and at the correct time. Dialysis and kidney transplant are the two main treatments available for providing a long and healthy life. If you are experiencing any symptoms of kidney failure then consult with a nephrologist about treatment, medications, and lifestyle changes.
